Abstract

he growth of online learning has transformed the higher education landscape, offering flexible, accessible, and cost-effective learning opportunities. This paper examines both the benefits and limitations of online learning in the context of student performance and engagement. Opportunities include personalized learning pathways, global access to resources, and the ability to balance education with work or personal commitments. Challenges include reduced social interaction, potential technological barriers, and the need for strong self-discipline among learners. The study reviews evidence from recent research to determine how course design, instructor presence, and student support services influence the effectiveness of online learning. Findings reveal that successful online education requires high-quality digital infrastructure, interactive teaching methods, and continuous feedback mechanisms. The paper concludes with strategies for maximizing the benefits of online learning while addressing its inherent challenges.
