The rapid expansion of social media platforms over the past two decades
has fundamentally transformed the way individuals communicate, share information, and build relationships. While these platforms offer numerous benefits such as instant connectivity, global networking, and access to information, growing evidence suggests that excessive or unregulated use may have detrimental effects on mental health. This paper examines the complex relationship between social media usage and psychological well-being, focusing on key mental health concerns including depression, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, and feelings of loneliness. It explores both the positive aspects—such as social support, self-expression, and community building—and the negative aspects, such as cyberbullying, social comparison, fear of missing out (FOMO), and addiction-like behaviors. The analysis draws on recent empirical studies, surveys, and psychological theories to understand how different patterns of usage impact individuals, particularly adolescents and young adults, who are among the most active users. Special attention is given to the role of screen time, type of content consumed, and the influence of online interactions on self-perception. The findings indicate that while moderate and purposeful use of social media can enhance mental health through support networks and positive engagement, overuse and exposure to harmful content can exacerbate mental health problems. The paper
concludes with recommendations for healthy digital habits, awareness programs, and policy interventions aimed at minimizing the risks while maximizing the benefits of social media engagement.
